How We Can Win – Black History In America, according to Kimberly Jones

A lot has happened over the last few weeks/months that have caused an uproar in the U.S. I could go in on a myriad of topics as to why, but I’ll just leave you with this video from writer/activist Kimberly Jones.

Those ignorant of history are bound to repeat it. So let’s learn why things are the way they are, why people are reacting in the ways that they are, and let’s start dismantling and rebuilding the systems that fly against the ever-quoted ideals of the “land of the free”, where all men are created equal.

New Klux Klan

It is painfully apparent that there is a subculture of law enforcement whose actions and character resemble the 21st Century Edition of the Klu Klux Klan. Thanks to social media, the world is becoming aware of cases where police officers are assaulting and arresting black and brown individuals for little other reason than asserting their power, “failure to comply” or because “they fit the description”. Meanwhile, there are citizens that support this bigotry through ignorance, bitterness, and/or blatant hatred. New Klux Klan

Through all of the injustices and tragic deaths caused by individual and/or systemic racism over the last few years, I have kept my thoughts and beliefs about them out of the workplace. Mostly out of professional courtesy, but mostly because it’s an uncomfortable, uphill battle to explain your reality to those who haven’t had to live it. The Thing About Racism…

Here we go again…

Connecticut College canceled classes Monday to hold day-long discussions on racism and hate speech following the discovery of the words “No N***ers” written several times on the walls of a campus building. This comes a few days after a school custodian was told to “shut the f**k up you ignorant n***er”, and just weeks after a professor posted a Facebook status describing Palestinians in Gaza as “a rabid pit bull chained in a cage, regularly making mass efforts to escape.” Racism Will Be Cured By Action, Not Discussion.
